Raul’s future is Energy Queensland

Over the 12-plus years he’s been at Energy Queensland, Raul Roa has rarely stood still. He’s continuously developed his skills and gained experiences that have set him up for life. Now in his ninth role with us, this Senior Technical Business Analyst is as motivated as ever to deliver positive outcomes for our organisation and the communities we serve. Read on to hear the secrets to Raul’s success and how a holistic approach to efficiency made all the difference.

A decade of growth

Raul’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance, curiosity and seizing opportunities. Originally from the Philippines, Raul migrated to Australia in search of new horizons. After building a foundation in retail and customer service, a chance encounter with a friend led him to an opportunity that would come to define his career.

“When I started exploring other opportunities, a friend told me about Energy Queensland - he raved about their culture. So, I sent in my application and I haven’t looked back ever since! This has been the longest tenure in my working career - and that’s for a reason.”

When Raul first joined us in 2011, his dedication and talent quickly caught the eye of his colleagues, and a three-month contract soon blossomed into a permanent role as a Project Officer.

“I started in the Admin space and got introduced to using enterprise systems. I’ve always had a natural curiosity in wanting to do things better - that’s helped me a lot in my career.”

Fast forward 12 years, and Raul is still here and thriving. As our Senior Technical Business Analyst, his ninth role within the organisation, Raul harnesses the power of data to inform key business decisions.

“What we do is basically look at data from different parts of the organisation and extract insights to deliver business values for our stakeholders and partners. We also work closely with the data management team who provide us with data governance so we know we’re doing things according to regulations.”

A supportive environment

Want to know the secret to Raul’s success over the 12-plus years he’s been with us? A growth mindset, a thirst for knowledge and incredible support from managers and mentors who helped him explore his potential.

“Looking back, it was my first manager who encouraged me to pursue a career growth pathway at Energy Queensland,” says Raul. “She really believed in my capabilities and supported me to progress into different teams and roles.”

Raul has always been proactive about driving his own career path and embracing opportunities to learn. In 2016, he pursued a master’s degree in Information Technology (Business Process Management) with the help of Energy Queensland’s study assistance program. This gave him the financial support and time he needed to focus on his studies.

“My managers understood the challenges of balancing study and work and offered a lot of support along the way. This experience gave me an opportunity to understand a lot of the concepts around information technology and get a better understanding of what’s happening in the industry. After I graduated, I was able to transfer that knowledge directly into my role at Energy Queensland.”

Data-driven impact

Raul’s work at Energy Queensland is rooted in a deep sense of responsibility. As an employee in a state-owned organisation, he understands how his actions directly impact the community he serves.

“I’m always mindful of how I can add value to our customers. Whether that’s reducing operational costs or providing key insights, every decision we make influences electricity costs for everyone, including myself.”

A prime example of Raul’s impact is his work on streamlining the demand and energy management reporting process. By leading the automation of data extraction and transforming static reports into dynamic self-service dashboards, his team was able to reduce report generation time from six days to less than one!

This achievement was more than just a numbers game. For Raul, it was about building strong relationships with end users. By involving them in the process, Raul understood the importance of creating solutions that were not only efficient but also user friendly.

“I found that if I bring people along on the journey from the start, they’re more likely to be engaged and there’s a sense of shared accountability.

“This was a key moment of self-discovery, where I had to swallow my pride and get over my introverted tendencies. It made me realise the importance of trusting others and developing great relationships to get great results.”

Looking ahead, the future is bright for Raul. With his effort in combining data and process analysis, he believes he can help Energy Queensland achieve greater efficiencies and deliver exceptional value to customers.
