Recruitment process

What is Energy Queensland’s recruitment process?

Our recruitment processes vary depending on the type of role you have applied for. You can expect the following process below for most of our roles, but please visit Graduate and intern recruitment and Apprenticeship recruitment for those processes.

Step 1 Recruitment Advisor review:

Our team will review your resume and application in line with the brief they’ve received from the Hiring Manager and the Job Description (position description).

Step 2 Phone screening:

We may contact you for a brief phone interview, to discuss details of your application or gain clarity, before finalising a shortlist for the Hiring Manager.

Step 3 Hiring Manager review:

Our Hiring Manager will review the shortlisted candidates and select candidates for interviews.

Step 4 Interview:

If your application progresses to the interview stage, your interview will be with the Hiring Manager and one to two others. This may include the Recruitment Advisor, depending on the role.

The interviews are usually 45 to 60 minutes and will cover a range of questions including your motivations, relevant experience, and alignment with our values.

The interview questions are behavioural-based, and we look for examples of your previous work outcomes and behaviours in your responses.

Interviews may be in person or via video link (Microsoft Teams) depending on your location.

Most processes only require one interview, but more senior roles may require two.

Step 5 Pre-employment checks:

Before progressing your application, we complete several checks that can include:

  • Reference checks - We will ask permission to contact two of your current or recent line managers to verify your employment details and suitability for the role
  • Qualification verifications – These may be conducted for roles with mandatory qualifications or trade licenses such as Degrees and Electrical licenses
  • Security clearance - For certain roles, successful applicants must also consent to undergo, obtain and maintain any relevant security clearance in accordance with the Security of Critical Infrastructure Act 2018 (Cth) and the AusCheck Act 2007 (Cth), as amended from time to time.

Step 6 Pre-employment medical:

One of our core values is: We’re Safe. We prioritise the physical safety and wellbeing of our people, customers, and communities.

If your role is field-based or will spend a proportionate amount of time in the field, you may be required to complete a medical which will be organised via Resile and paid by us.

Step 7 Offer:

Our Hiring Managers will reach out to verbally offer you the role and our Recruitment Team will endeavour to get a written offer to you no later than 3 business days after your verbal acceptance.

A link to your offer will be sent via email and available for you to view and accept via your account in our Jobs Portal.

Are there any other steps involved?

For certain roles, you may be asked to complete additional steps, such as:

  • Psychometric assessments
  • Skills assessments
  • Case studies.

Your Recruitment Advisor will provide guidance and further information on any additional requirements and steps.

How long does our recruitment process take?

Our recruitment process times vary according to the role and the steps involved but typically will take up to six weeks for office and white-collar roles (from the date the ad closes) to eight weeks for blue collar and field-based roles (due to the additional medical requirement).

Our Recruitment Team will keep you updated throughout the process including if there are any changes to our timelines, but please reach out to your recruiter if you have any questions about the status of your application.

You can also check the status of your application by logging into our Jobs Portal and selecting "My Profile" and then "My Applications".

Do I need to submit a cover letter with my application?

We often ask for a cover letter for office-based and white-collar positions, but not for blue collar/field roles.

For most blue collar/field roles, we only require a resume and there won’t be an option to include a cover letter.

If you would like to attach a cover letter or additional information, we recommend you combine all the documents and upload them as one file at the attach resume stage.

What should I include in a cover letter?

A cover letter should be a one-page introduction about yourself and include information that is not in your resume, such as your motivations or desire to relocate for example.

Do I need to provide my working rights documents when I apply for a role with Energy Queensland?

You are not required to provide any documentation with your application, but all successful applicants will be asked to provide evidence/documents to support their:

We also encourage you to regularly check our website for any future vacancies.

Can I be kept informed of new vacancies in my area of interest?

If you register for our Jobs Alert, you will automatically be kept informed of new vacancies that match the preferences you have given.

I have applied, but I haven’t received a confirmation email. What should I do?

We recommend applicants check their "spam/junk mail' folder in the first instance.

If you don’t find an email from us, you may have failed to complete all steps and/or hit the final submit button. Please log back in and complete all the questions and ensure you have hit the final submit button.

Can I apply for multiple jobs?

Yes, but you will need to submit separate applications for each role. If you are progressing to interview for more than one of the roles you have applied for, we will discuss this with you prior to the interviews.

We encourage you to narrow your choices down to positions that truly match your skills, experience, and preferred location.

When will I hear if I have been successful?

The recruitment time frames can take several weeks and can sometimes be dependent on the number of applications received. Our Recruitment Team will keep you updated throughout the process, but if you have any questions about your application please contact us via the details in the job ad, or via our Careers Enquiry Form.

We are unable to provide customised feedback for every application we receive due to the large volumes of applicants. We will provide general feedback on your application, when possible.

Who can be my referee?

Candidates who progress to the reference check stage will be required to provide names and contact details of at least two referees with the following criteria:
