Set your career up for life

Naomi Clayson never expected the casual call centre job she started during university would set her up for a lifelong career. But soon after joining Energy Queensland, the support she experienced made her realise she was in it for the long haul.

“Development is a really big focus here, and it’s a key part of what cemented my decision to continue progressing my career within the organisation. I was still working in the call centre when I identified that I’d like to move into the regulatory compliance space, so my manager at the time arranged for me to spend a week down in Brisbane with our Compliance Manager.”

After completing her law degree, Naomi followed her path into compliance, and after ten-plus years and multiple roles, she’s now our Senior Regulatory Policy Officer. Naomi's achieved so much over this time and her journey is far from finished. Whatever direction she decides to take next, she's confident she'll be supported to succeed the whole way.

“Ever since I first joined, there’s been an ongoing conversation with every leader I’ve had. ‘Where do you see yourself in 12 months? In five years?’ You’re not pressured to know all the answers, it’s more for them to understand how they can support and motivate you to succeed in your career. They want the best for you because it means the best for them as well.”

Get close to the action

When Dane Thomas took his first steps into the world of renewable energy, it was as a mature-aged university student with a passion for making positive change. A summer internship with Energy Queensland in 2012 set him up for success and exposed him to the incredible opportunities on offer here.

“When I started university, I wanted to work with remote communities. It felt like something I was called to do. Now, as Manager of Isolated Networks, my team are looking after 33 networks that are so remote, they’re not connected to Queensland’s main electricity network. We’re currently working to get renewable energy into those communities. It’s an honour to be able to do that.”

Although he’s based in Townsville, Dane’s role often sees him travelling far and wide across the state - and beyond. He still pinches himself every time he flies over the Great Barrier Reef en route to the Torres Strait Islands. In addition to bringing electricity to the area, his team is dedicated to ensuring the safety of the community.

“We’ve got a few really passionate people in our team who visit schools and construction sites to talk about electrical safety. I think that’s really cool, and super important in small communities like that. I feel grateful that Energy Queensland gives us opportunities to develop ourselves and others - I certainly don’t take it for granted.”

Make time for what matters most

Not many people can say they’ve been with the same company for 17-plus years, but Alrun Wigund wouldn’t have it any other way. What’s kept her here so long?

“I’m working with some of the best power engineers in the country, which gives me the opportunity to collaborate with and learn from some really bright people."

"From the very beginning, the development has been great, and it’s just gotten better and better. I really think it’s world class. There’s no better place in Queensland to do this work.”

Having a fulfilling career means more time to focus on what’s most important. For Alrun, it’s the comfort of knowing that her health and wellbeing is in safe hands.

“Everyone goes through ups and downs in their lives, so it means a lot to have such strong support systems. We have fantastic diversity and inclusion initiatives, mental health programs and a culture that values wellbeing as an important component of your work life. It’s completely normal that people need time out every now and then, and it’s never been a problem to find the right balance at Energy Queensland - and that’s fantastic!”

On the front lines of progress

As a state-government owned and funded organisation, it’s front of mind for everyone at Energy Queensland to deliver as much value as possible for our customers. This is most often seen on the front lines - literally! But our impact extends far beyond power lines and electricity boxes. Our Senior Technical Business Analyst, Raul Roa, knows this best.

We all feel a sense of responsibility to be mindful of how our work maximises value for our customers. I’m a consumer of energy as well, so it’s always in my head about how our work is going to have an impact downstream."

"My team in Enterprise Intelligence are in a good position to harness data and provide insights on how we can reduce operational costs, which the business always tries to take on board.”

A key way we can do this is through our systems and processes, which Raul is an expert in after 12-plus years with us. Whether he’s developing new processes or streamlining old ones, Raul has found that involving key stakeholders in the process makes for more efficient and user-friendly outcomes - in his eyes, it’s all about collaboration.

“It can be challenging, especially for me as an introvert, to try and translate the more technical language I use into common business terms. But I’ve found that when the end user is invested, they’re more motivated to use the solution. And, on a personal level, it’s helped me to connect with people, develop relationships and share challenges and successes with them. That’s something I feel proud to have achieved in my career.”

Safety - it’s in our hands

It’s a hard truth that working in the power industry can be dangerous. But someone has to do this work - millions would be impacted if we didn’t. At Energy Queensland, we know the risks our people take every day to keep the lights on for Queensland households, which is why safety is always our number one priority.

“We’re really big on safety here,” says Graduate Engineer Conor Graham. “It’s the first thing we look at, especially in engineering. It’s never just about hitting KPIs - we have to minimise risk across all aspects of our designs. If we have a suggestion for improving safety across the broader workgroup, the business or the public, Energy Queensland always listens and tries to make it better.”

Conor has seen this firsthand in the many construction sites he’s visited throughout the graduate program. As he gears up for his next rotation - working with our Isolated Networks team in Far North Queensland - he’s more mindful than ever of the impact our work has on communities who need us.

“It’s an incredible opportunity. It allows me to travel to isolated, community-based sites and explore different ways of introducing renewable energy. If the community already has solar generation and network power, what would the transition to renewables look like? What are the requirements we need to consider? It’s also very beneficial for me as an Indigenous person to re-engage with my community, and be a role model for Indigenous kids wanting to learn about energy.”

A cleaner, greener future

As a subject matter expert in enterprise architecture, Alrun Wigund could choose to take her expertise anywhere in the industry. But there’s one key reason why she’s chosen to stay with Energy Queensland for over 17 years.

“If you look at how the energy industry is structured, and where all the really big challenges are, no other place has the same kind of interesting problems to solve as Energy Queensland does. I’ve been passionate about smart grids for a very long time now. I said to everyone, ‘I want to build this smart grid’, and there’s no better place to do that than where I am right now.”

As a Digital Strategist, Alrun applies her incredible knowledge to developing strategies for Queensland to move towards a ‘future grid’ network - ensuring that our power network can host the renewable energy resources we’ll need for a clean energy future. Although the name has changed from Smart Grids to Future Grids, Alrun’s passion has remained, and she’s more invested than ever in seeing it through.

“The beautiful thing about the Future Grid space is that everyone has figured out they can’t do it on their own anymore. Our energy network is the biggest machine we have in the country, covering almost every single Australian state, so keeping it stable is a nation-wide effort. It has huge impacts, especially as we look to the future. When people come over here for the Olympics in 2032, I would really love to be able to say we achieved our targets and delivered a climate-positive Olympics.”

Reimagining the future

For Naomi Clayson, being part of Energy Queensland isn’t just a job - it’s a chance to make a lasting impact on the community she calls home. As a Senior Regulatory Policy Advisor based in Rockhampton, Naomi is at the forefront of a transformative period for Queensland’s energy landscape.

“We’re having a once-in-a-generation transformation, and I want to be able to look back and say I was part of it. Energy Queensland offers me the opportunity to shape that transformation - why wouldn’t I take advantage of that?”

Central to this transformation is a State plan that outlines how Queensland’s energy system will transform to deliver clean, reliable and affordable energy to provide power for generations. For Naomi, this presents an exciting opportunity to shift gears and take her place on the frontline of meaningful change.

“We’re working to rebuild a network that hasn’t seen major updates in nearly 100 years, and there is a big focus on increasing skilled labour. I’m eager to take advantage of the opportunities this organisation offers to meet the need for more engineers. It’s exciting to be part of that transformation.

“Working for Energy Queensland means the customers I’m serving are my friends, family, and community. Being government-owned, we’re driven by the goal of delivering the lowest possible cost while achieving meaningful results for the people of Queensland.”

Building the foundations

Senior Project Engineer, Ehsan Haque, sees the journey towards a renewable future as both a personal and professional mission. Ehsan has been passionate about renewable energy since the early days of his career, and he now finds himself at the heart of progress towards a greener, more sustainable future.

"I’ve always wanted to be part of the renewable journey. Now, with the Queensland government’s push towards a renewable-powered grid, I’m right in the middle of that. Ten years from now, we’re aiming for over 80% of our electricity to come from renewables. Today, we’re building substations and wind and solar farms to make it possible. And I’ll be able to say, ‘I was part of Queensland’s renewable revolution.’”

Of course, no worthy task comes without its obstacles, but Ehan sees these challenges as opportunities to grow and innovate.

“The reason I’m here is to solve problems. So far, we’ve done a phenomenal job delivering projects - from small to large. As we look towards that net-zero future, we’re going to see more projects coming in and more problem-solving. For me, that means I get to be part of the journey and I get to grow myself as well. That’s a win-win!”

Community visions for a sustainable future

The work of bringing power to some of Queensland’s most remote communities is both a challenge and a privilege. Nobody understands this better than Manager of Isolated Networks, Dane Thomas. With the help of his team, Dane leads efforts to transition renewable energy sources to remote communities - a shift that holds the promise of a more sustainable and resilient future.

“Many of the communities we serve are so remote that they’re not connected to the main electricity network and have to rely on diesel generators. A big focus right now is to transition to renewable energy, like solar power and batteries. We get to work with some of the most beautiful places and communities across Queensland. It’s very exciting, and it’s an honour to do this work.

“For us, it’s about understanding all the risks involved. We’re working with people who have relied on diesel generators and networks for a very long time, so it’s understandable that they’re nervous about the impacts of change. We want to bring people on the journey and upskill them to be able to work on the power plants operating in their area. It’s a challenge, but there's a lot of opportunity there as well.”

For Dane, the mission is clear: to power Queensland’s remote communities in a way that honours their unique needs and visions for the future. It’s a challenging role, but one filled with immense opportunity and the chance to make a lasting difference in the lives of those he serves.

"In places like the Torres Strait, where climate change is already having a significant impact, our work is about more than just providing power. It’s about aligning with the community’s vision for a decarbonised future and ensuring that we’re not just meeting their needs, but exceeding them in a way that’s sustainable and forward-thinking."
